Laptop Buying Guide: Things to Look for in Your Next Computer (2018)

Buying a laptop as I know is not like the purchasing a smartphone, why am I saying this? Because laptops are far more expensive than smartphones (some) as the case may be.

To buy a laptop, there are many things that you have to put into consideration, and that is what I am going to show you in today’s stroll.

To buy a laptop, first of all you have to consider the amount of money that you want to budget for that, after that then you will now go on to know other things that are essential or that is to be considered before buying a laptop in the market that is already flooded with laptops of different specs and prices.

What To Consider Before Buying A Laptop

Size:

Nobody would like to purchase a laptop that is as heavy as car engine thus making it unable to be carried about or would you like to? For students, if you are to buy a laptop today or tomorrow I will advise you to go for a laptop of 13-14 Inch, it weighs less and would be easier for you to carry into your lecture hall.

Processor:

This is typically referred to as the brain of the computer; it determines how faster that your computer functions. The speed of a processor is measured in gigahertz (GHz), for game lovers and programmers I would advise you to go for laptops with the fastest processor.

Battery Life:

The Battery Life is directly or indirectly the first need of any user. If the device’s battery system is of poor quality, then one will face many certain problems. The very first thing to do as a customer is, first ask about the Laptop’s battery life. So one should check and enquire about maximum support the Laptop’s battery will give. The standard need is 4 hours or as per usage.

RAM:

(Random Access Memory) Helps your processor perform tasks by acting as a temporary storage point. In short, the more RAM you have, the more programs you can keep open at once, and the faster your computer will go. RAM of laptops ranges from 2GB and 16GB. The higher the RAM, the better.

Connectivity:

Consider the devices that you would like to connect to and check if the system has the feature e.g. USB Port, is it WiFi enabled? Does it have Bluetooth? For connecting to monitors and projectors, look for a VGA connection at a minimum. Aim for a DVI, HDMI or Display Port.

What Are Features A Computer Science Student Should Look For When Buying Laptop?

For computer science students you will need a first class CPU – Core i7, Core i5, or even core i3 – for fast compilation of Java code and quick testing of scripts. You need to have as much RAM as possible so your system won’t slow down when running IDE, browser, Apache, MySQL, etc. at once. You need a minimum of 720p resolution (1366 x 768, or 1280×800).You need the screen estate to reduce the overhead of app switching.Your laptop should have decent battery life; at least 4 hours, so you won’t be frustrated by PHCN. Otherwise, you should get an inverter.
